Coming from an HBCU for my undergraduate studies, I never prepared myself for
attending a PWI...especially an Ivy League school. My time at a PWI was not the funnest,
however, I did manage to make the most out of it with the help of my support system such as
friends, family, and colleagues. Identifying as a Black girl, in a predominately white, and racist institution, I was blessed to have created a community of wonderful, smart Black individuals who also had the same career goals as I do. I met these groups of individuals through either my courses or orientation.Resources that were provided to me during my time at a PWI was the school’s Black Caucus and having the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Dean of the school as my mentor. Both have provided me with nothing but support and a safe space for me to express my thoughts and concerns when I was dealing with my identity during Grad school.
Although I enjoyed the community built, like several Black folx at my institution, I also
experienced Racism several times during Grad School. I had personal experience with
professors who did not deescalate conversations that were hurtful towards BIPOC individuals. I have called a professor out for outting me before to make a White girl feel safe when she was being held accountable. The professor apologized and took accountability. There were moments when I have attempted to hold white classmates accountable as well, however, I do believe that BIPOC individuals do not receive the support needed in PWI’s. Due to systematic Racism. Even in the “School of Social Work”, Racism still lies. Social Work was built on White Supremacy and in order to dismantle systemic Racism, I believe that we would have to start local, which is in our schools. We need more than DEI and Black Caucuses. We need more accountability from our White colleagues and professors. We need more action done relating to dismantling racism in all aspects. We need accountability and change. Without that, we will not get anywhere.
